Click here to watch the item Homeowner in Reflection I remember my house growing up. It had a great big Oak tree right in the middle of the back yard. That old oak was a big part of my life as a kid. I used to lie in bed during cool summer nights, and listen to the wind blow through the leaves and into my window to cool us down after a hot day running around. We had a tire swing hanging off one of the branches -- the kids from the neighborhood would come over and we could play under that tree for hours. The rule was we had to go in when the street lights came on. Later my Dad put a porch swing on that tree. Had my first kiss there too. An older couple lives there now. They love to sit under the tree and relax, talk, have an ice tea. I'm glad it's still there for them, but I worry. I've read about a tree disease called Sudden Oak Death. Once a tree like our old oak gets it, it's only a matter of time. Sudden Oak death and other diseases and bugs that kill trees spread when people move diseased wood around. Pests and diseases hitchhike on wood packaging, nursery plants, and firewood. That's not smart. Think about it: If we just buy our firewood nearby where we use it -- for our homes, or camping -- then we can protect trees like my old oak. For generations to come.
